"WINGS... what they mean to me..."
after a night's sleep alone in my bunk (buddy has compassionate leave)it dawned upon me that somehow... it was like some enlightenment... i mean seriously.... here i go trying to explain this enlightenment.
WINGS
The Power to Believe, The Power to Soar, The Power to Protect, The Power to Consume
As a child, many of us would have thought flying was something only Peter Pan or any other cartoon character could do. Superman who was muscular, wore underwear on the outside was able to fly and be a hero. Spiderman who could go airborne using his webby. Amazing people never thought where else it could come out from him. But anyway, it has been an established fact that we all have been exposed to flight at a very young age.
After we watch these cartoons, thanks to our little minds and a little thing called imaginations, we try to mimic such heroes, trying to learn how to fly. To be among the clouds. Folding paper aeroplanes, making one's hands turn into wings and "flying" around in your primary school. Many of us feel the thrill of being able to create flight through our little works of art or simply from our imagination. But have we ever taken to the skies like how superman or peter pan ever did?
It is through our first flight... our first commercial flight on a family holiday or whatever signifies your first airborne flight in your life. the feeling of the power beneath your wings... the vibrations of the aircraft as it seemingly speeds uncontrollably down the "very big road" (otherwise known as a runway) after you feel that you're travelling as fast as your dad speeds down the highway you suddenly feel a sinking feeling although you are already on the ground and as if the aircraft gave a little jump and everything changes. it changes...
Heavy vibrations suddenly turn to a smooth whirring of the aircraft engines. from the comfort of your seat you feel as if some unknown force is pulling you back into your seat. As you look out the window, you see a crooked world, but WAIT... as you look carefully... things are getting smaller! YOU ARE AIRBORNE! Like a butterfly trying to break free from its cocoon, you feel the aircraft that has already given the gift of flight, continues to climb uncontrollably fast and you slowly get higher and higher. A thud below your feet and a whirring noise from the sides suddenly give the aircraft a smoother ride, as if she were going to streamline herself for something even greater. And yes, she was about to show you something even greater than just flying.
soon before one knows it, the windows go white, the aircraft begins to vibrate once again. you feel once again this uneasy feeling "why is the aircraft shaking so much? is everything ok?" (any pilot would tell you in order to get a smoother ride you need to fly higher. what he says is true. BELIEVE IT!) but suddenly as the vibrations cool down, you take a look outside. The ground is no longer visible, but a new "ground" has appeared. a whole island of white... you are beyond the clouds... above all.
Tis the feeling i felt as i flew for the first time at the age of 6 or so. after being fascinated by those little objects flying so high, i was finally able to be among them. Something that today i still can remember though the sight seems all to familiar, that very day where my own two eyes saw the clouds below me, painted in a light purplish blue, is like a dream come true. That little episode was what gave me my first Wings.
The Power to Believe.
The Power to Believe that i too could be like superman, peter man or any other tom dick or harry who could fly. I now know that flying was believable. Something i now Believe. What really made me believe, was during that same flight i was above all. As that journey ended, i got to meet the person who brought me there and back again. The Pilot.
He was a polished person, definitely tall... cause i was short. but none the less he was someone i looked up to. (ironic isnt it) A person who took the joy of showing us his sky, his world. perhaps it was on my face that gave him that smile. that pilot smiled at me as if i was now a converted Believer. perhaps did he know that that flight though being very normal to him, was a flight that was to open my eyes, to dare to look up into the sky and say... "i've been there!" From then on, i told my parents that i wanted to be like him some day. some day...
WINGS: The Power to Believe.
